Due to the amount of dust and limited rainfall we have in Arizona, only about 8 inches a year in Phoenix and surrounding areas, it's recommended to have the solar panels professionally cleaned every 3 months.  However, they should be cleaned at minimum every 6-12 months.

Unfortunately rain does not get the job done. Once the rain evaporates it still leaves behind the dusty particles that it seemingly collects & washes away. In reality it leaves behind a thin film of dirt that can only be scrubbed away with a water-fed cleaning brush. 


If you didn't wash your vehicle for a year, consider the end result. Your windshield, mirrors and vehicle would be covered and caked with all the same pollutants that your panels are exposed to 365 days a year such as pollen, dust, leaves, dirt, bird droppings, etc.

No. This is not an effective means of actually cleaning the panels. 

Most solar panels are out of reach safely from the ground and tap water will actually leave hard water spots, including lime-scale buildup, limiting the performance. Cleaning your own panels with high pressure, chemicals or abrasives can damage the panel 's glass protective coating over time which could possibly void your warranty. A simple rinse will not completely remove debris build up that can be cleaned effectively with a water-fed brush with filtered deionized water.

Inspections and regular cleaning will protect the system. Your solar panel manufacturer and installation company may require the owner to clean and regularly maintain their solar panels. Failure to clean your solar panels regularly may make your warranty void. Check your Manufacturer's Warranty Information. 

No. High-speed moisture can quickly force its way through the seals around the frames and get into vulnerable technology. These water leakages can promote corrosion of the fine wires, which leads to the failure of the solar panel and its photovoltaic cells.

Also, the glass surface can break under high water pressure. A pressure washer directs a focused beam of water in a highly concentrated spot, which creates an increased chance of stressed areas that can crack.

Localized soiling of solar panels is when material like bird poop, leaves, and any other heavy blockages get stuck on your panels, but only cover parts of the panel. Compared to general soiling, this is where material like pollen, dirt and dust covers the entire panel surface.

When the rain and wind fail to remove localized soiling, these and other debris can block some parts of the equipment causing hot spots.

Your panels are made of many individual cells. When localized soiling blocks out sunlight from reaching some of the cells, its energy production drops. However, full current flowing from the nearby cells may pass through the affected one. This can result is overheating of that cell and others, thus likely to cause damage to the panel(s).

Most modern solar panels come with several built-in bypass diodes to keep hot spots at bay. Unfortunately those extra dirty areas can still lead to damage over time that will likely increase your maintenance cost and reduce the amount of productivity.
